Laura hosts LAGBAC’s 35th Anniversary Gala and Interviews the next Chief Justice

Chicago, Illinois — Dynamic Emcee and Keynote Speaker Laura Schwartz recently hosted the 35th Anniversary Gala of LAGBAC at The Penninsula Chicago. The evening brought together members of the Illinois judiciary and lawyers representing public and private practices for one evening to celebrate the work and strides of LAGBAC. LAGBAC is one of the largest and most well-respected LGBTQ+ bar organizations in the country.  Its members include lawyers, judges and other elected officials, law students, and other legal professionals.

Among her hosting duties, Laura was privileged to conduct an on stage interview with the incoming Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, Justice Mary Ann Theis. Justice Theis will be sworn in as the Chief Justice on October 26, 2022 becoming the fourth woman to serve as Chief Justice and the 122nd Chief Justice in Illinois history. In the interview Laura discussed a variety of topics with Justice Theis including the Justice’s vision for the court, judiciary reform, the confidence in the United States Supreme Court, the United States court system as a whole and equal representation under the law.

Laura commented, “It was an absolute honor to host LAGBAC’s 35th Anniversary Celebration and all this great organization stands for and stand beside as it comes to equal rights and representation. A highlight of the evening was of course sitting down in conversation with Justice Theis who is a remarkable judge who has served in every level of the illinois Judiciary. I look forward to her term as the Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court beginning October 26, 2022.”

 

 

What is LAGBAC?

LAGBAC is one of the largest and most well-respected LGBTQ+ bar organizations in the country.  Its members include lawyers, judges and other elected officials, law students, and other legal professionals.  Since 1987, LAGBAC has united and strengthened the LGBTQ+ legal community by:

  • providing its members vast social and networking opportunities;
  • presenting hundreds of hours-worth of continuing legal education;
  • granting scholarships to law students;
  • working with Lambda Legal, the Public Interest Law Initiative, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, and other organizations, to connect students with internships in their areas of interest;
  • offering mentoring to students and young lawyers; and
  • evaluating candidates for judicial office as a member of the Alliance of Bar Associations for Judicial Screening.
